M.I.O. is a platformer game in which you play a robot who wakes up in the Ark, a huge ship in a sorry state that you’ll have to restore.
The metroidvania style offers both exploration and creature battles, and especially boss battles, so it’s your ability to analyze enemy movements, and your dexterity in moving and fighting which will matter. The further you progress, the more technical the exploration and battle phases become. Your reflexes will be put to the test!
MIO offers several aids regarding combat. For example, you can regenerate faster, bosses are depleted to reduce their difficulty with each attempt, and there’s a pacifist mode. It’s up to you to decide when to start the battle, so enemies don’t attack you as soon as they see you. Be careful in combat, though, for you can’t tell where enemies are beyond your field of vision, even if you can hear them.
However, when it comes to exploration, there isn’t any help at all! Jumping, gliding and dodging sequences become increasingly demanding and require very fast reflexes. So without assistance, that’s going to block a lot of people, especially since finding your way around the game will also be a big challenge. In fact, the map is fairly basic, with just a few icons. What’s more, it’s not accessible at the beginning. Therefore, players who have difficulty orienting themselves will find this problematic.
We tested it in detail in French with Amelitha on Twitch, so take a closer look!
